chase and a struggle occurred. more than a month into the trial and her 18th day on the stand jodi arias offered a brand new scenario for how the knife came into play. listen to this. >> you needed to go get that knife at that point, correct? >> no. it's possible travis grabbed the knife first. >> you never told us you had any knife there did you? >> no, i wasn't asked. >> jury members also had questions about the knife. seems they, too, were trying to make sense of her changing story. >> you said you remember putting the knife in the dishwasher after killing travis. but you also say you don't remember anything after dropping the knife on the bathroom tile. which is correct? >> i have a vague memory of putting the knife in the dishwasher. i'm just not sure if that was june 4th. >> and there are more questions about the gun used to kill alexander. was it in a holster or not when she says she grabbed it out of the closet.

now suddenly she's not so sure. and this is key, because the state believes she brought a gun with her to kill alexander and never really grabbed a gun from alexander's closet. arias seemed to get tripped up again on this question about whether or not the gun was loaded. >> did you tell the jury when you were talking about the tal attack in response to one of their questions that you believe the gun was unloaded. do you remember saying that, yes or no? >> i don't know. >> after that, the prosecutor let her have it. >> what were you going to do with the gun, throw it at him? >> for once even jodi arias seemed to tphrurserred to answer. >> in her scenario, she would have had to run and gone somewhere to get the knife, presumably the kitchen.

that does not fit with her story. what it fits with is that she entered the bathroom armed with a gun and knife and that shows pre-mmeditatio premeditation. from cnn headquarters in atlanta, this is "early start weekend." the threat of attack against the u.s. is putting the u.s. on alert. >> also, after marathon testimony, jodi arias is finally off the stand but will her 62-second sob cost her her life. march madness arrived and we will show you how to prepare for it. it's saturday march 16th. i am joe johns in for victor

site on the east coast of the united states. >> one other note on north korea and the threat, the south reports the north fired off a pair of short-range missiles into the yellow sea, and it's a rising tension in the korean pennsylvania. a few hours from now lawyers will be back in the courtroom in the case against two high school football players accused of raping a 16-year-old girl that witnesses say was drunk. three teens testified yesterday after being granted immunity saying they witnessed trent and malik sexually abuse the girl at the end of a summer party. one of the witnesses admitted of recording. we want to warn you the next

hope you are having a great saturday so far. i am susan hendrix in for randi kaye. >> and i am joe johns. here are five stories we are watching this morning. rapper, lil wayne is recovering after having a seizure. his record label and publicist fought back reports saying he was in a medically induced coma and near death. he tweeted last night saying i am good, everybody, thanks for the prayers and love. his friend came to visit in l.a. and set up a vigil outside his hospital room. two people are dead after trying to rescue a 6-year-old boy from a water fall. the boy fell in the big sioux river yesterday. his big sister and a man jumped in after him. the boy survived and the crews found his sister's body and are now looking for the man's body. pope francis met with the media for the first time in

vatican city. he said he picked the name francis because he was a man of poverty and peace and he said he wants a poor church for the poor. we learn this morning that francis will meet with benedict xvi for the first time since the election on saturday. mitt romney offered advice for conservatives yesterday saying they needed to learn from his mistakes. sarah palin speaks today at noon. the state of maryland is preparing to ban the death penalty. yesterday democratic governor martin o'malley says he will sign the bill into law after it passes the state legislature. he says the death penalty does not detour criminals and is more expensive for life in prison. one prosecutor is promising to challenge the new law. the pen the gone is taking threats from north korea very seriously to the tune of a $1 billion expansion of the missile

defense system on the west coast. >> defense secretary chuck hagel says it's necessary for national security. tom foreman has more on the threat and how the defense system is supposed to work. >> the pentagon is acknowledging that north korea is becoming a global threat because at the speed in which is it developing its nuclear program. how does the u.s. military want to respond to that? at the front line by going to the pacific ocean where korea on its best day might be able to launch a missile that would go out and hit some parts of the united states. what will they do about that? they want a new base in japan here to be tracking what is happening and beef up missiles in alaska and california and steady monitoring from ships at sea and planes over head and satellites all watching to seek

something is the sometime our way. how would that work? it would send the cord tphupbts of the flight. they could take it out if they do. what they want is numerous shots at it so they can stop it and that's really the goal. they have to have numerous shots because this is all still fairly new technology and it's not all entirely reliable. we don't know if the north koreans can get a missile to go this far, but also to stop it is a tricky thing to pull off. this is what we would launch out of alaska or california and it would release something like this, it's called an atmospheric kill ravion. when it gets released it locks in on the nuclear war head in

the missile and it will guide this in to smash it and tear it apart. it does not explode. it's about as big as a refrigerator. it smashes into it and tears it apart. you can imagine how difficult that is to pull off. this is what we are trying to perfect so we can stop the north korean technology. >> a good visual, and we thank him for that. general marks will be here to talk about the realities of the north korean threat and the capabilities of the missile defense system. florida, three people are dead after a small plane crashed in a parking lot. it happened yesterday in ft. lauderdale. the twin engine plane went down shortly after takeoff. it sparked a fire that engulfed several parked cars. nobody on the ground was hurt.

the spacecraft home after 144 days at the space station. the three astronauts landed in kazakhstan several hours ago. they travelled nearly 61 million miles. bad weather forced a delay. carnival cruise lines forced to fly passengers home after a ship named "dream" turned into a bit of a nightmare. that was not the only ship having a rough week. the "legend" had problems affecteding the speed, and the "elation" was having problems with the steering. and who can forget the "triumph"

once month ago? and 50 people are being told to evacuate as a fire in a state park northwest of denver pushes towards the homes. gusty winds and drought conditions are not helping. the fire could spread fast. a second smaller one is burning nearby as well. no word on how they started. last year was one of the worst wildfire seasons on record. to the mid-atlantic where it's shaping up to be a rainy saturday, and meanwhile for the south record high temperatures and spring fever, it's setting in, and so glad it's here almost. we will go to our meteorologist for a look at your weekend forecast. alexandria, looks good. >> yeah, it's a split decision. i am all revved up from the plank pushups i have been practicing from desiree this morning. the wildfires you were just showing video of, they will have rains that could quell it today.

have to keep an eye on that. here is the big picture. a split decision. we have a quick-moving system and watching it through i-80 with snow showers, and in the atlantic and western maryland and west virginia, thunderstorms, believe it or not, and the rain moves through washington, d.c. it's the final winter weekend today. cold in the northeast and mid-atlantic but very spring like in the south. here is the deal. 10 degrees below average today, dry in boston, and new york 10 degrees below, and pittsburgh and washington as well and virginia, but here in the southeast, incredibly beautiful, 10 degrees above average, atlanta, jackson, little rock, and dallas in the 80s and should be in the 60s. big picture, the snow and warmth. the southwest had record heat the last couple days in phoenix, and salt lake city. temperatures not quite as warm as they were, but still above average and the pacific northwest rain showers moving

in. if you can be out there skiing, high elevations snow, and lower elevations in denver, snow showers. this dog story has really got me going. the idea of putting your dog on a plane and he ends up way far -- >> it's one thing to lose your luggage when you are waiting, and then you go, where is my dog? >> the springer span annual, 6 years old, his name is hendrix, and already a world traveler, but not on purpose. >> hendrix, and no relation to myself, he was going to phoenix but ended up in ireland. all the way to ireland. >> food and walks in between, but that's the kind of trauma you don't want to repeat. >> one happy dog.

18 days. that is how long murder defendant jodi arias testified in her own defense on the stand. did she save her own life by testifying? earlier i asked jane velez-mitche velez-mitchell. she finally said, oh, yeah, i killed him but it was self defense. there is no corroboration for that self defense except for her telling it. she was so elaborate with some of her -- well, i think we all concluded, lies, that she may have created so many

inconsistencies it was a opportunity for the prosecutor to show that she is a liar. >> juan martinez, he has gone after her full force on the stand. >> were you crying when you were shooting him? >> i don't remember. >> were you crying when you were stabbing him? >> i don't remember. >> how about when you cut his throat, were you crying then? >> i don't know. >> did you think at all that his style may be turning off the jury? >> well it's very, very aggressive. i have to say when you are do dealing with a pathological liar, and i do believe she is a pathological liar, you have to be aggressive because you can't nail them down. she is constantly using phrases like i guess and asking him to define his terms, if you say so it's possible. she slides out of everything she tries to pin her on. it's frustrating and at times he let's his frustrations show. as far as aggressive, you have to hone in on a pathological

liar and rattle them to shake them off her story and that's how he got her to say, it was a holster, which is totally bad for her, and she has to take the gun out of the holster, and it showed the inconsistencies in her story more, and he is little over the top but has to do something. >> i think we got a look into what the jury may be feeling and thinking, with the 200-plus questions. do you think that rattled her? >> yeah, i think she would be back in the cell rocking in a fetal position. why should we believe you now when you lied so many times before? how can you remember intimate details of the sexual encounters but can't remember stabbing somebody 29 times? they were hostile and sarcastic and rhetorical and gave us an insight into the soul of the

jurors, and they were not buying her act. >> yeah, doesn't seem like they like her at all. and the next phase is the experts. do you think they will save jodi i life? >> her life is riding on the experts. clearly the jurors through the questions did not believe it. they will bring the psychologist on that will argue ferociously on saying this fog does exist, and we heard battles about this already and saying police officers go into the fog when they shoot somebody and they are trained to shoot somebody. so if he can prove that this so-called fog, which the prosecutor was so sarcastic about, and the jurors were so sarcastic about it, if it's real then maybe, maybe that's the only chance for jodi arias not to get the needle. >> stay up to speed on the jodi arias trial. you can catch her on weeknights at 7:00 p.m. eastern time. and then here is your week
